"Local man John Mackie didn’t let redundancy get him down – he saw it as an opportunity to make a fresh start and is now launching his own business. John is opening a brand new Pitman Training centre in Twickenham.
John, who is 53 and lives in Teddington, has an impressive track record in the field of learning. After several years as a teacher he moved into educational publishing before working for the National Foundation for Educational Research and then moving on to a sales director role within the conference sector.
‘When I was made redundant last year, I decided the time was right for a change,’ explains John. ‘I wanted a new challenge but one which utilised my experience and skills. I also wanted to invest in my own future rather than working for someone else.’
‘The Pitman Training brand is well-known and well-respected across all generations. I felt that being part of such an organisation, especially with the comprehensive training and support provided as part of the franchise package, would be a great opportunity. When I visited other Pitman Training centres and met the teams and some of the learners, it convinced me that I wanted my own Pitman Training franchise.’
The Pitman Training method is based on flexible, self-paced learning in a non-competitive environment. Learners are provided with an audio CD and workbook and can choose the study times that suit them best, working around their existing commitments. A tutor is always on hand to answer questions and provide support and encouragement.
‘Unlike traditional colleges, the Pitman Training approach to learning means that you can start whenever you’re ready and fit your study times around work or family ties,’ continues John. ‘Courses range from basic IT skills to advanced secretarial diplomas and accounting. All our courses are superb quality, reasonably priced and lead to a recognised qualification.’
John’s financial partner in the business is Robert Ellis. Robert’s son Sam, who has recently graduated from the University of Southampton, will be working with John at the centre.
The new Twickenham centre is based in brand new offices in Regal House near Twickenham Railway station. It is ideally situated with lots of parking and easy access to public transport.
Based on the 5th floor of the modern, purpose built business centre, the Twickenham centre will initially house 15 workstations within two separate training rooms. There will also be a meeting room for one-to-one consultations and a seating area where students can relax.
‘I’m very excited about the opening of the Twickenham centre,’ says John. ‘We’ve created professional yet comfortable surroundings without the intimidating feel of a classroom. One of the benefits of the Pitman Training method is that students can learn at their own pace. You can start a course when you’re ready without having to wait for the start of a new college term. Our courses are ideal for all types of learners – whether you’re impatient to get your qualification quickly or you want to take things slowly.’
‘We have already had lots of positive interest in the new centre, with enquiries from both corporate customers and private individuals. Learning a new skill or building on existing knowledge makes a real difference to people and most businesses find that developing the skills of their employees makes a positive impact on productivity and effectiveness. I firmly believe that the Pitman Training method is a great way to learn,’ concludes John.
